Many generations of musical instrument making starting somewhere in the late 1700’s or early 1800’s is what makes a Hugo more than simply a passion for guitars. Guitars are in his blood! For Hugo the whole thing started in the early 80‘s when he came in touch with Pete Townshend and his 1958 Gibson Korina Flying Vee. From that point on he started building and customizing and learn along the way with in his backpocket a great inheretance. Being a gigging musician he always felt the need for a better guitar. Through the mid 80s to early 90s Hugo started collecting old Gibson and Fender guitars from the 50s and 60s, mostly Juniors, special and Gold Tops. Along the way he started making what he didn’t had. Old Korina Vee’s, Explorers and of course bursts. At the same time the cold war ran into an end and Hugo had the opportunity to purchase some nice stash of very old Honduran and Korina wood from behind the former Iron curtain“. Remember a huge part of eastern Germany and the czech republic were a instrumentmakers from origin and not allowed to build under their own name. In the late early 90s he got his hand on som famous Vee’s Lp’s and Explorers and disassembled some oft he originals in a restauration process and made his own plans and templates from it. Together with other collectors he made plans of all the important and collectable guitars that are out of reach for most musicians today. His first Replica Bursts and Juniors, along with Explorers and Modernes found their ways to players and collectors.
Hugo Guitars are made of (very)old stock woods, Nitrocellulose laquer, Hide glue and Celluloid bindings. And i can tell you from experience. Ist the best out there. I don’t think there is another builder in the world who combines a inheritence and craftmanship like his, with such a nice stash of almost ancient honduran and other woods.
If you want a Hugo you should contact me, you won’t be able to speak directly to him. We are old friends and ist simply part oft he deal between him and me..He doesn‘t like to be bordered and wast time behind his computer or talking the whole day to potential customer when he can be working on guitars…So ask Rudi!! I know if there is a chance to buy a Hugo or not! In general he doesn’t do custom work or fake to fool somebody to gain money or betray someone. Hugo guitars are made to be played on stage for those who want to play guitars as they were back in the good old days when Gibsons were made in the Kalamazoo area by skilled luthiers. Hugo... Hugo is always proud when a real musician buys one of his guitars and appears on stage with it. Many do! Don’t be mistaken..Hugo will always be a bit of a mistery..but his guitars are the best out there!
