Collings Serial Numbers

How can I determine the age of a particular acoustic guitar?
All of our acoustic guitars built after 1991 have a 3-5 digit serial number (stamped into the mahogany neck block) that can be used to date the instrument. It's important to understand that serial numbers are assigned at the beginning of the build process. Since we build a large number of customized instruments each year, the build time can vary significantly from guitar to guitar. This means that guitars do not leave our shop in sequential numerical order (as if the numbers were stamped at the end of the process). We've put together an approximate listing of serial number ranges by completion year. Please keep in mind that these are only rough guidelines. Some instruments, particularly those with serial numbers that fall close to the beginning/end of the range, may have actually shipped in the previous/following year.
