You're at the start of one of the most exciting guitar experiences: ordering your own Martin Custom Shop guitar! Perhaps you know exactly what you want, or you might still be doubting between some options. The possibilities are nearly endless, so creating the ultimate guitar isn't an easy task. That's why we walk you through the creation of a Custom Shop Martin step by step! 1. Choosing the base model Let's start with the foundation of the guitar: the body shape! Martin offers six base models ranging from the small-bodied '0'-model to the almighty dreadnought. Which model you should pick, depends mostly on your playing style and the music genres you want to play. The dreadnought was created in the quest for more volume and has become a legendary model for country and bluegrass where players often use strumming and flatpicking. If you're a singer-songwriter or prefer to play with a lighter touch (like fingerstyle), then smaller models like the '0' or '00' are wonderful instruments. 2. The Tonewoods When you've decided on a model, it's time to shape the sound you're looking for. Tonewoods don't only play a part in the looks of your dream guitar, but it is also one of the most important factors in tone. In the factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, Martin has a large storage room filled with tonewoods of all types. As one of only 5 Martin Custom Shop Expert dealers in the EU, we have access to this wide range of tonewoods.Whether you like koa, cocobolo, walnut, or the classic options mahogany or rosewood, it's all possible! Be sure to check the video where Coen personally picks out some pieces of wood for Custom Shop guitars. 3. The Neck As equally important as the body is the neck of your guitar. With the Martin Custom Shop, you can choose the neck shape, taper, nut width, and scale length that feel just right for you. Once again, Martin offers plenty of options, so whatever your preferences, you can create the neck that gives you ultimate playing comfort. 4. Hardware Now it's beginning to look like a guitar! This brings us to picking the hardware. That does not only include the bridge and tuning machines, but also the bracing. With bracing, you'd want to consider these two main factors: Type of wood Type of bracing. Do you want scalloped or non-scalloped bracing? And should this be positioned forward shifted or rear-shifted? As one of the few Martin Custom Shop Expert dealers, we can advise you with even the tiniest details. 5. Decoration & Inlay It's time to put the icing on the cake! With the inlay and other decoration details, you can create a truly unique instrument that belongs to you. You've probably guessed it already, the options are once again endless. From the headstock decal to the bridge pins. Perhaps you like the classic look of an antique white binding with herringbone purfling, tortoise pickguard and dot inlay. Or do you want to create something a bit more luxurious and add abalone snowflake fingerboard inlay and rosette? 6. Accessories You now have a pretty clear image of your ultimate guitar. But perhaps it still misses that finishing touch. No worries! Whether it is a pickup or strap button, you can add the final touches before completing your order. And to protect it from the elements, you can also select the case. Congrats! You've just created your dream Martin Custom Shop guitar! Are you ready to make your dream a reality?
