The J35 was introduced by Gibson in 1936 as a way to boost the company’s revenue. It remained in production until 1942, when it was succeeded by the J45. The guitar is known for its dry, woody tone, considered by many to be the pinnacle of acoustic guitar sound. This J35 leaves little doubt as to why!The 1930s in the United States were marked by the Great Depression, and during this period Gibson’s Jumbo was not selling particularly well. To improve the company’s financial position, Gibson introduced the J35 in 1936. Essentially a more affordable version of the Jumbo, it featured a simpler and lighter construction that helped reduce production costs. This resulted in a responsive, lively instrument with a character quite different from the large, raw sound of the original Jumbo. In 1942, the J35 was succeeded by the illustrious J45, but during its six-year production run the model underwent several changes. The guitar featured non-scalloped bracing and single cream-coloured binding along the front and back edges of the body. It also had a mahogany neck with a V-shaped profile and understated appointments, with simple dot inlays marking the positions on the rosewood fingerboard. The spruce top and mahogany body made the J35 a direct competitor to the Martin D18.This guitar has undergone several repairs to keep it in good playing condition. A neck reset and refret have been carried out, and both the bridge saddle and pickguard have been replaced. Two patches have also been installed in the top, filling the areas where a pickup and volume control were once fitted near the bridge. The bridge has been reglued, and a shim has been added beneath the end of the fingerboard.Inside the body, cleats have been installed to stabilise several cracks: two along the centre seam behind the bridge, two on the treble side of the soundhole and two on the upper bout of the back. There are also a few small cracks in the binding and rosette material. Finally, the finish on the top has been touched up around the repaired areas. The guitar retains the unmistakable vintage Gibson look that is so appealing to enthusiasts of vintage instruments. It also delivers the characteristic dry, woody sound that makes the J35 such a favourite for chordal accompaniment to vocals, with a particularly strong representation of the low and midrange frequencies. This guitar has been carefully inspected for condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.
