gibson-les-paul-p90-cherry-sunburst-1973
Gibson Les Paul P90 Cherry Sunburst 1973

This Gibson Les Paul with P90s is a guitar that kept our own Fellows busy for quite a while, because for fans of Gibsons from the 70s, this is a mouth-watering guitar!

The famous single-cut Les Paul was replaced by the SG body style in late 1960, and the original Les Paul did not return until 1968. Upon its reintroduction, the Les Paul differed from the 50s model in a number of respects: the headstock had a slightly steeper angle, the control cavity in the body was cut differently, and the neck tenon was longer. In 1969, the Les Paul Deluxe was added to the lineup. The Gibson Les Paul was therefore primarily released as a Deluxe in the early 70s, and these were occasionally equipped with P90s in addition to mini humbuckers. Due to the absence of the name Deluxe on the truss rod cover, it is somewhat unclear regarding this guitar, but it is very likely that this guitar is also a Deluxe.

A notable detail of Les Pauls from the 1970s is the use of multiple parts for the body and neck. This construction method is also found in this example, in the form of a multi-piece pancake body, a three-piece plain maple top, and a three-piece mahogany neck with a volute. As is typical for guitars from this decade, the weight is substantial; this Les Paul weighs 4.46 kilograms!

Dating this guitar was an interesting task, as the serial number 178235 places the guitar in the very broad timeframe of 1970-1975. To find a more specific year, the codes on the potentiometers provide the answer, and the code 1377344, which is legible on three of the four CTS potentiometers, tells us that these date from the 44th week of 1973. This means that the guitar was very likely built in that year, but it could also be an early example from 1974, given that the potentiometers were kept in stock by Gibson. When the guitar arrived at our workshop, we immediately discovered that the frets had seen better days. We therefore performed a refret in our own workshop and immediately made a new binding with fret nibs. The guitar looks pristine again and, of course, plays like a dream!

Furthermore, this Les Paul is a beautiful vintage guitar; the original tuning machines and bridge-tailpiece combination are present, and the original finish is still present in all its glory, with just a few touched-up spots. An honest and well-maintained instrument that will bring its new owner a lot of playing pleasure!

This instrument has been carefully inspected for originality, condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0960/6607/7019/files/GibsonLesPaulP90CherrySunburst1973-2.jpg?v=1784294949
