This Martin D35 David Gilmour set consists of both the 6-string and 12-string versions, two instruments directly connected to the sound and playing style of one of the most influential guitarists in modern music history. While the original D35 was a staple in Gilmour's studio and writing work for decades, these signature models represent a contemporary interpretation, built with his personal preferences as the starting point. Production was limited to 250 instruments in total, but ultimately stalled at just 178 6-strings built, making this set particularly special. In terms of construction, these models deliberately deviate from traditional D35 specifications. The neck, sides, and back of both guitars are finished in sinker mahogany, a wood chosen for its warm, rich tone and distinctive grain. The 6-string features a VTS-treated Adirondack spruce top, while the 12-string is fitted with a Carpathian spruce top. The 12-string adds a layered, almost orchestral dimension, while the 6-string excels in focus and nuance. Details such as the vintage gloss finish and antique white binding give both instruments a weathered look that suits their musical background well. The origins of these models lie with Gilmour's original D35 from the early seventies, a guitar he bought on the street in New York at the time and which grew into his primary acoustic workhorse for both Pink Floyd and his solo work. Following the sale of that instrument at auction in 2019, it was decided, in collaboration with Martin and Westside Distribution, to develop both a new 6-string and 12-string that align with his current musical vision. Each guitar in this series features a label hand-signed by Gilmour, making this set not only musically interesting but also giving it a distinct place within the collector's circuit. The 6-string D35 has light signs of wear on the pickguard, two shiny spots on the back of the body, and glossy lacquer on the back of the neck. It is therefore evident that the guitar has been played, but it nevertheless is very clean and is in near mint condition. The 12-string D35 is in very good condition. Traces of what is likely a leaking dampening bag can be found inside the guitar's body. As a result, the top has sagged slightly on the treble side of the upper bout, and very small stress lines have formed in the lacquer on the side of the body due to the slight expansion of the wood. However, the guitar is structurally stable and plays and sounds as you would expect! This special set comes in a beautiful Slate Blue case that is a lovely nod to the past.Consignment.
