The 1933 Martin OM18 is one of the most influential acoustic guitars of the pre-war era. Developed in the late 1920s as one of the first Martin models to feature a 14-fret neck joint, providing guitarists with easier access to the higher positions. This innovative construction, combined with the long 25.4-inch scale length, made the OM a beloved instrument among both fingerstyle players and flatpickers. The OM18 combines a solid Adirondack spruce top with solid mahogany sides and back, a combination that produces a clear, direct sound with powerful projection, a fast response, and an excellently balanced tone. The lightweight construction and refined X-bracing from this period contribute significantly to the open, dynamic sound for which pre-war Martins are renowned worldwide.Furthermore, a 1933 example features the non-adjustable steel T-bar in the neck, a hallmark of Martins from this transitional period. 1933 was also the last full production year of the Orchestra Model. From 1934, Martin introduced the 14-fret neck on the 000 series as well, after which the model name OM disappeared from the catalog. Because only a few hundred OM18s were built, a 1933 example is currently considered one of the most sought-after pre-war Martins. Not only because of its rarity, but also because this model still serves as inspiration for many modern interpretations, such as the Martin Authentic series. This OM18 has had a turbulent existence, as the guitar has undergone various expertly executed repairs. For instance, we see a repair to the heel, where a new piece of mahogany has been glued to the neck. Additionally, the guitar has a new fingerboard with new frets, the tuning machines have been replaced with Waverlys, and the finish on the back of the neck was sanded down and later reapplied. A new bridge has also been installed, and the maple bridge plate has been repaired. The outline of a tailpiece on the top and the four screw holes on the side of the body are striking; the guitar therefore once had a completely different look! This instrument has been carefully inspected for originality, condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.Consignment.
