Figured maple gives resonator guitars a bright, sparkling voice — and a striking look to match. This National Scheerhorn Maple pairs that tonewood with the L-body design that turned the Scheerhorn name into one of the most respected in modern resophonic guitar building, finished in a rich amber gloss that lets the figure in the grain come through.Tim Scheerhorn built his first resonator guitar in 1989 and showed it to dobro player Mike Auldridge, who was immediately won over by its tone. Word spread fast, and Scheerhorn guitars were soon in the hands of top professional players. Where traditional Dobro-style construction had barely changed since the 1930s, Scheerhorn re-engineered the instrument from the inside out — a larger L-body air chamber, solid tonewoods throughout, and an open sound-chamber design with internal baffles in place of the old soundwell. National Reso-Phonic now builds this L-body line under license, working closely with Tim to keep his original standards intact. The top, back, sides and neck are all cut from the same flamed maple, with a rosewood fingerboard, cast spider bridge on maple inserts, and chrome fan coverplate and hardware. The square-neck profile is built for lap-style slide playing, with a 635mm scale and 47.8mm nut width — moving the bridge closer to the centre of the top's vibrating area, which gives this guitar more projection than older Dobro-style instruments and lets it easily hold its own over a full bluegrass band. This 2020 build is in excellent condition overall, with a few light play marks on the chrome cover plate as the only sign of use. Comes in a hardshell case with TFOA Passport.
