Fender Stratocaster Mocha 1976

When CBS bought Fender in 1965, there were many complaints regarding the quality of fender products of the late 1960s. According to critics the quality of Fender guitars decreased due to acceleration of the production process. There were complaints regarding the neck pockets, micro tilt neck, 3 bolt neck and about the lacquer. Of course this was bad news for the Fender corporation, and they tried to improve the quality of their guitars in the 1970s. They regained popularity with the newly introduced models the Telecaster Deluxe and Telecaster Custom, and another important move was changing the standard 3 way switch to a 5 way switch, this modification was requested by strat-players ever since the late 1950s! 14 years after the Stratocasters’ introduction, Fender made the 5 way switch an option in 1968, and made it standard in 1977. Many of the pre 1977 guitars, that originally have a 3 way switch, are replaced for 5 way switches, and mostly the 3 way switch is gone.

This Mocha Fender Hardtail’s original pickup selector has been replaced for a 5 way switch, in order to play any combination of pickups available. Yet, the original 3 way switch is included with the guitar. The same for the tone and volume knobs. The knobs have been replaced, but the original 1976 ones are still in the case, leaving them in a good condition. Black pick-up covers come with the guitar, but the original white one are installed on the  guitar. The original hardtail bridge is, despite its age, in a good condition and it helps to generate a good sustain, what guitars from the 1970’s are known for!

This guitar has had a professional refret where the same frets as original replace the original ones, the current frets are in a good condition and will last long. The neck and the three part body had a refinish, and this has been done professionally. At first the lacquer felt original like the thickish 1970s lacquer. You can see the clear alder grain through the lacquer of the body, the rosewood of the fretboard has a nice looking grain to it as well.

This Fender Stratocaster Mocha Hardtail from 1976 is in excellent condition. This guitar has been treated nice in its 40 years of age, but it has been played, light scratches on the body shows up in certain light. There’s a small lacquer chip at the lower bout and upper horn at the treble side, and a very small ding next to the strap holder. The low set up combined with the Stratocaster’s authentic 7,25” radius generate a good playabity for this 1976 Fender Mocha Brown Hardtail. The guitar comes with its original hardshell case and some 1970’s case candy. It includes an original 70’s Fender Guitar strap, 1970’s instrument cable, Fenders Limited Warranty registration card from 1976, truss rod wrench and instruction sheet, and its authentic Fender Owner’s Manual!
