Gibson F-2 1914

Gibson F2 from 1915 made in the Kalamazoo factory. The F2 is basically the same mandolin as the top of the line scroll F4, but with less fancy cosmetics. It has the deluxe rosette with rope/ivoroid/rope inlay. The last production number from 1914 was approximately 20150, and the last serial from 1915 was approximately 25150. Through the black top you will see the grain of the ancient Sitka spruce. The back and sides are feature beautiful figured slab cut birch in dark natural finish.

In our opinion the frets are original, because there is no sign of woodchips, frets being pulled out or any damage to the binding. So the frets are either original, or replaced on a very professional level with binding replacement many years ago. This Gibson F2 does not have the usual scroll repair, although one might think so. The front of the headstock shows a line which might look like a crack, but this is done while the mandolin was produced by Gibson in order to apply a complete scroll.  On the bass side scroll of the body is a small crack on the back side, nothing bad and barely visible. The Handel tuners are replaced by well-functioning tuners. The pickguard is replaced, bridge, tailpiece and hardcase are all original.

This 1915 Gibson F2 is in Excellent condition, which is exceptional  for a mandolin which is more than 100 years old. It is almost all original, the playability is really good with a good set up, it getting harder to find an early Gibson F2 every day. The mandolin has a pure and deeply aged tone, super dry basses and clear ringing trebles, all that in good balance. This Gibson F2 from 1915 in Excellent Condition comes with its original case.
