Catalinbread Soft Focus Reverb
De Soft Focus-patch op de Yamaha FX500 werd in de jaren '90 veel gebruikt door vroege shoegaze-bands, met name Slowdive op Souvlaki. Met die roots, is de Catalinbread Soft Focus bedoeld als een instant shoegaze-knop, terwijl hij de meest in het oog springende problemen van de originele eenheid aanpakt: geen mixcontrol, een ondermaatse voorversterker of een afgrijselijk toonzuigend bypass-signaal.
In de kern is de Soft Focus een sterk gemodificeerde plate reverb met instelbare tijd, die vervolgens in drie paden wordt opgesplitst. Eén pad bevat een meerstemmige chorusmodulator, een ander heeft een goed uitgeruste octave-up gemengd met de reverb, en het derde pad laat de reverb onaangeroerd.
De Mod-knop regelt de snelheid van de chorus op pad één en de Symphony-knop regelt het niveau van het octaaf op pad twee. Alle bedieningselementen zijn "gekoppeld" aan de toon van de reverb om gebruikers een uitgebreid speelveld van geluiden te bieden om te ontdekken en te verfijnen.
De Soft Focus is geen exacte recreatie, maar werd uitvoerig vergeleken met Catalinbread's eigen FX500; het verschil is dat er een vrij generieke fixed-time digital delay aanwezig is op de Soft Focus-patch.
