Gibson J45 Century 12 Fret Ebony

Since the 1930s, Gibson's round-shoulder acoustic guitars have been among the most recorded acoustic instruments in American music history. Their warm, open sound and strong string-to-string balance have made models like the J45 world-famous. Introduced in 1942 and better known as “The Workhorse,” the J45 grew into Gibson’s best-selling acoustic model thanks to its understated appearance, reliability, and versatile character on stage and in the studio.

With the J45 Century 12-Fret, Gibson gives a new twist to this classic design. Where a standard J45 features a 14-fret neck joint, here the neck connects to the body at the twelfth fret. As a result, the position of the bridge shifts further toward the center of the soundboard, where it transfers energy to the body more efficiently. The result is a warmer, fuller, and more resonant response with strong dynamics, particularly suitable for fingerstyle players and guitarists with a lighter touch. While earlier 12-fret versions were largely limited to rare Custom Shop and signature models, Gibson is now making this character more widely accessible within the Century Collection in honor of 100 years of Gibson Flat-Tops.

The guitar combines a mahogany body with a Sitka spruce top and is finished with subtle vintage details, including an early 1900s Gibson script logo, open-back Golden Age tuners, and a classic closed-slot rosewood bridge. The SlimTaper 12-Fret neck is attached with hot hide glue via a compound dovetail joint, which contributes to resonance and sustain. Furthermore, the J45 Century 12-Fret features a rosewood fingerboard with simple mother-of-pearl dot inlays, a bone nut and saddle, a hand-sprayed satin nitrocellulose finish, and a premium Century Collection tweed case.
