A vintage guitar like a 1955 Les Paul Junior is special enough on its own, but paired with an amplifier of the same name from the same year, it simply doesn't get any better!
The Gibson Les Paul Junior was introduced in 1954 as a budget-friendly alternative to the high-end Les Paul models. Designed to appeal to beginners and young musicians, the Les Paul Junior featured a simple construction with a single cutaway, a single P90 pickup, and simple tone and volume controls. The body was made of mahogany, which contributed to its robust, full tone. Despite its simplicity, the Les Paul Junior offered a powerful, raw sound that quickly became popular with rock and blues musicians.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Les Paul Junior was prized for its direct and unadulterated tone, which was ideal for emerging rock 'n' roll and blues genres. Although initially positioned as an entry-level model, the Les Paul Junior eventually became an iconic instrument, beloved for its simplicity and pure tone. The guitar makes a beautiful pairing with a Gibson GA5 amplifier, a model that, like the guitar itself, was also called the Les Paul Junior and also launched in 1954.
This stylish little amplifier delivers 5 watts of power and features a 7-inch speaker. It was equipped with a circuit based on Fender's Champ 5C1. Like the guitar, the amplifier is simplicity itself, controlled by a single volume knob. In 1957, the GA5's specifications were revised, and over 10,000 units were built during its three-year production run.
The powerful heart of this guitar is the original P90 pickup, which, with its 7.89kW output, produces a rich, full tone with precisely the vintage bite these models are famous for. The mahogany body provides a warm resonance and solid sustain, while the rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays and the robust C-shaped neck provide an authentic playing experience from Gibson's golden age.
The guitar's finish shows the expected crackle, playwear, and dings. The guitar has been refretted, and significantly wider frets were installed than were originally on the neck. The bridge has also been replaced with a compensated one for better intonation, and the nut has also been replaced. The back of the headstock shows that the tuners were replaced at some point, but the guitar is now equipped with period-correct tuners.
A unique set that should be a must-have for any Gibson collector!
