Gibson Melody Maker Double Cut Cherry 1965

This 1965 Gibson Melody Maker Double Cut in Cherry is a genuine slice of sixties Gibson history that has been given a thorough, thoughtful overhaul. Feather-light at just 2.6 kg and full of that unmistakable vintage vibe, it now packs a serious tonal upgrade in the form of two Gibson P90 soapbar pickups.

The Melody Maker was Gibson's affordable, stripped-back solidbody of the late fifties and sixties, loved for its lightweight all-mahogany build and simple, resonant construction. This double-cut example carries all of that vintage charm, from the cherry finish to the slim mahogany neck and comfortable 24.75" scale.

This one has clearly had the works. The electronics have been completely replaced, with the original Melody Maker single coils swapped for a pair of Gibson P90 soapbars. Fitting these required a few modifications, which is also why it now wears a different pickguard, and both the bridge and the tuners have been replaced as well. The result is arguably more reliable and versatile than stock, with the fat, gritty, midrange-rich voice that only a good set of P90s can deliver.

As a heavily modified vintage instrument, it is in very good playing condition but wears its history openly. Most notably, the strap button on the back has been re-installed several times over the years, leaving a somewhat messy area, though it now holds securely. Elsewhere it shows the honest wear you would expect from a guitar of this age. All in all it keeps the vintage appeal of a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker while offering arguably more dependable electronics and a fantastic set of P90 soapbars.
