A Gibson slope-shoulder guitar has been the first choice for singer-songwriters for decades. And it almost doesn't matter how much a guitar has been through; especially when they're vintage, they have a certain magic that simply can't be matched artificially.
A vintage Gibson always evokes a warm feeling at The Fellowship of Acoustics, with the Slope Shoulder models bringing out the inner singer-songwriter in everyone. The Southern Jumbo was introduced in 1942 as a more luxurious version of the popular but simple J45. It found its place alongside the J45 and J50 in Gibson's lineup and gained fame in the guitar world largely thanks to Hank Williams Sr.
The Southern Jumbo featured Gibson's premium tonewoods, 5-ply binding, and split parallelogram inlays on the bound fingerboard. The typical Gibson dry woody tonal character is, of course, unmistakable and found only in vintage Gibson guitars. Warm and mellow when played lightly, yet capable of delivering plenty of punch and projection with a firm stroke. Perfect for all styles of flatpicking and rhythm guitar playing!
This 1943 Southern Jumbo has accumulated considerable experience over the years, and several repairs have been carried out to keep it in good condition. For example, we find two repaired cracks on the back of the body, with a light refinishing spray applied to the bass side. The bridge has also been sanded down, and the saddle is a bit low. However, the guitar plays perfectly, thanks in no small part to the fretboard's slightly compound radius refinish. A pickup was also installed at some point, but it has since been removed. The guitar now features vintage Kluson tuners, but the screw holes on the back of the headstock reveal that other tuners were also installed at some point. A light refinishing spray has also been applied to the back of the headstock.
So, this is a guitar that has seen its fair share of wear and tear, and the stories it tells resonate beautifully in the guitar's lived-in sound! It's a beautiful piece from Gibson's rich history, and a wonderful addition to any guitar collection!
