James Goodall is a master luthier from California; his craftsmanship is of the highest caliber, and his instruments are true works of art. With this Special Reserve Crossover, Goodall combines the best of both worlds: the familiar playability of a steel-string guitar with the warm, full tone of a classical guitar. Moreover, the distinctive myrtle wood gives this guitar a beautifully balanced sound with rich overtones, while the German spruce top ensures excellent projection and clarity.Goodall’s Crossover series was born from a desire to offer guitarists accustomed to steel-string instruments a comfortable transition to nylon strings. The result is an instrument that sits somewhere between a classical and a steel-string guitar—in terms of both appearance and playing feel—blending a touch of Spanish elegance with a bit of American flair. The wider neck, featuring a 47.4 mm nut, offers ample room for fingerstyle playing, while the familiar C-profile and 16" radius make the transition from a steel-string guitar easy. While a traditional classical guitar can sometimes sound a bit shrill when playing chords, this Crossover excels in versatility. The lattice bracing beneath the German spruce top ensures a responsive, lively tone with remarkable dynamic range. The bass notes are full and resonant without becoming overpowering, while the high strings cut through clearly and really sing when played with a firm touch. Whether you are fingerpicking delicately or strumming vigorously, this guitar responds with equal conviction. The myrtle wood used for the body deserves special mention. Originating from California and Oregon, this wood is prized by luthiers worldwide for its exceptional tonal qualities. It produces a full, balanced sound with beautiful harmonic overtones. Visually, it is stunning as well: the warm, light orange-brown hues and subtle grain patterns make every Goodall crafted from myrtle unique. This 2025 Goodall shows light signs of play on the back of the body, specifically on the upper bout on the bass side. Otherwise, the guitar is indistinguishable from a brand-new instrument. This guitar has been carefully inspected for condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.
