Lowden D12 Mahogany Spruce 1995

The Lowden D12 is a rare model in George Lowden's history and forms a special chapter in the story of the Irish builder. While Lowden is nowadays primarily known for his characteristic O-, F-, and S-bodies, in the 1990s he also offered a dreadnought for guitarists seeking the powerful projection of this classic model but unwilling to compromise on the open, responsive sound for which Lowden is known. This 1995 example was built in the workshop in Newtownards, Northern Ireland, a period in which the quality of Lowden's instruments was among the absolute pinnacle of European guitar making.

The D12 combines a solid spruce top with a solid mahogany back and sides, a classic combination that produces a powerful, balanced sound with clear highs, a warm midrange, and tight, controlled lows. Thanks to Lowden's proprietary bracing design, the guitar responds exceptionally dynamically, and every note remains beautifully defined, whether for subtle fingerstyle playing or powerful plectrum strumming. The five-piece mahogany neck not only contributes to the instrument's stability but also provides the comfortable playing feel for which Lowden has been renowned for decades.

This Lowden D12 shows signs of wear and a few small dings on the top, body, and neck, and the bridge saddle has been replaced. Overall, however, the guitar is still remarkably clean. Because the D-series was produced for only a limited period, these guitars are rarely found on the market today. This makes this Lowden D12 not only an excellent playing instrument but also a special collector's item for enthusiasts of the brand.
