The first guitar George Lowden built for Pierre Bensusan in 1978 was ‘the old lady’, as Pierre affectionately calls her today. Well-worn and heavily played, but also much loved, she is still played by Pierre to this day. Lowden saw a challenge in designing a new guitar that retained many of the features of the ‘old lady’, while offering greater comfort. That is why this new model is fitted with an ebony bevel. To give this new model greater depth and clarity, Lowden chose Madagascar rosewood, a perfect match for the Adirondack spruce top. In character, tone and colour, Madagascar rosewood comes close to Brazilian rosewood. It has a similar texture, density and hardness, with almost the same tonal clarity, warmth and depth. The guitar also features an ‘F’, or Grand Auditorium, body shape, a five-piece neck with a 45 mm/60 mm Fingerstyle profile, a 25.6-inch scale length, a rosewood bridge and Gotoh 510 tuners with ebony buttons. This 2023 Lowden has two very small finish imperfections around the binding on the back of the body: one on the treble side of the cutaway and one inside the cutaway. Otherwise, the guitar is indistinguishable from a new instrument. It is everything we have come to expect from Lowden: an instrument of exceptional quality! This guitar has been carefully inspected for condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.
