What guitar does Ed Sheeran play?

June 24, 2020

What once began on the streets ended in packed stadiums and millions of streams. But which guitar does Ed Sheeran use to achieve this?

Good news for anyone who wants to sound and play like Ed Sheeran: you can do it for very little money!

After briefly flirting with other models, Ed Sheeran, at 16, stumbled upon the verry affordable Martin LX1E Little Martin. A fantastic, compact travel guitar with that true Martin sound and a Fishman pickup, allowing you to play amplified with a looper pedal. Sheeran put this to good use while playing at train stations, as you can see in this video:

An added benefit of Little Martin travel guitars: they maintain their pitch and can withstand a few knocks thanks to a laminated back and a nearly indestructible neck made of pressed birch. A truly portable companion, thanks to the included travel bag. As Ed Sheeran puts it: "My whole world was in that bag."

With this choice, Ed Sheeran put these easy-to-play budget guitars on the map. Martin has even released several signature models based on that same Little Martin, including one very luxurious version for Ed Sheeran himself.

But after seven years of touring with Little Martins, it was high time for something different…

Sheeran briefly dabbled in an Australian mini Maton and also occasionally plays a Fender Stratocaster, though those remain occasional pieces. For his new number one acoustic guitar , he looked closer to home, as Irish blood runs through Sheeran's veins, and that's why he's always had a huge love for Lowden guitars. Fantastic instruments, but not the first choice for stuffing in a backpack and playing on the street for years. Lowden guitars are known for their price tag and everything you get in return: deep, dreamy tone, perfect finish, the finest tonewoods, and excellent intonation.

But how do you make an affordable, roadworthy guitar that suits Sheeran? Luckily, George Lowden has come up with a solution.

Guitars with the distinct Lowden timbre: soft, folky, and a touch mysterious. Combined with the incredible playability you expect from Lowden, and thanks to a laminate back instead of solid wood and some cleverer production, they also come with a very affordable price tag.

As the largest Lowden dealer in the Netherlands, we are very pleased with this line from Ireland. The Sheeran sound is now within everyone's reach. Want to know more about these guitars?
