This 1978 Fender Precision Bass in Natural is a proper slice of late-seventies Fender history. With its ash body, maple neck and maple fingerboard, it has the bold looks, satisfying heft and punchy tone that define the era's P-Basses.
By the late 1970s the Precision Bass was the industry-standard workhorse, and this is a lovely example. Better still, it remains highly original: it retains its original tuners, its original grey-bottom split-coil pickup and the original volume and tone controls. The natural-finished ash body, chunky maple neck with the vintage 7.25" radius and classic 34" scale all add up to that unmistakable seventies P-Bass character.
That original split-coil pickup delivers the deep, punchy and wonderfully solid Precision tone that has anchored countless records across every genre. The simple volume and tone controls keep everything focused, and at 4.4 kg it has the substantial feel that suits the era.
As a vintage instrument, it wears its age honestly. The finish has started to flake in places on the neck and fingerboard, and there is a reaction in the finish where moisture has interacted with the crackling lacquer, leaving a milky-white clouding in some spots. These are cosmetic traits of a well-lived seventies finish and simply part of the bass's story. It comes with a hardshell case.
