Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Proprietary Light Ebony Ltd. 2019

This 2019 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Proprietary Light is an unusual and clever twist on the classic single-cut, finished in classic Ebony. As the name suggests, its body is noticeably slimmer than a standard Les Paul, roughly half the usual thickness, which makes it far lighter and more comfortable to play while keeping the look and voice of the real thing. At just 3.7 kg, this is a genuinely easy-to-wear Les Paul.

This "Light" version was a limited run built specifically for the Japanese market, and thanks to its popularity a number of examples have since found their way to Europe. Beyond the thinner, back-contoured and weight-relieved body, it follows the classic Les Paul Deluxe recipe: a carved maple top on a mahogany body, a mahogany neck with a comfortable C profile and a rosewood fingerboard, a Tune-O-Matic bridge with stop bar tailpiece and vintage-style keystone tuners. The Deluxe's signature mini-humbuckers complete the picture.

This example is in excellent condition overall, with a little honest character to show for its years. The top finish has started to show some fine crackling, and there are a few scratches on the pickguard and the back of the body. None of it affects the way the guitar plays; if anything, the checking lends it a touch of vintage charm.

The Les Paul Deluxe is defined by its mini-humbuckers, which deliver a brighter, tighter and more articulate tone than full-sized humbuckers while staying hum-free and full of midrange punch, equally at home with sparkling cleans, crunchy rhythm and singing leads. With independent volume and tone controls for each pickup and a three-way switch, there's a wide range of sounds on tap. Add the slimmer body, the 12" fingerboard radius and the 24.75" scale, and you have a Les Paul that's exceptionally easy and rewarding to play for hours on end.
