If we come across a nice vintage Martin D28, we know it here at The Fellowship of Acoustics: it will be a New Arrival!
This 1949 D28 beautifully showcases the big, full tone of the mighty dreadnought. Known for its booming projection and tone, the Martin D28 has been one of the best-known and most trusted models played by guitarists worldwide since its introduction in 1931. It also showcases the best of the tonewoods, featuring beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood back and sides and a Sitka spruce top.
The dreadnought back and sides produce a beautifully balanced tone, with a powerful bass that is very appealing. The tonal qualities of Brazilian rosewood remain unsurpassed to this day, and when you play this guitar, you'll immediately understand why. The deep tone and power this guitar produces, combined with the thick, slightly rounded V-neck, give you the ultimate vintage Martin playing experience!
The guitar has undergone some repairs over the years but is therefore in very good condition. Two cracks on the top have been repaired; A center seam crack and the well-known pickguard crack caused by the pickguard shrinking. Furthermore, we see playwear and dings that betray the guitar's 76-year age, such as around the pickguard and on the back of the body. In terms of repairs, several other repairs have been carried out. The bridge has been replaced, and the maple bridge plate has been repaired. A neck reset and refret have also been performed, and the nut and tuners have been replaced.
While we sometimes wonder where some vintage guitars began their journey, this D28's is perfectly clear. Included are two original purchase receipts, which show the guitar was sold in December 1949 by The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company in Buffalo, NY, USA. Unfortunately, we don't know where the guitar went next, but for the remainder of its musical life, this beautiful Martin travels with CITES in a vintage Martin hardshell case from the 1970s.
