This Martin D35 David Gilmour is an instrument closely connected to the sound and playing style of one of the most influential guitarists in modern music history. While the original D35 remained a constant presence in Gilmour’s studio work and songwriting for decades, this signature model offers a contemporary interpretation built around his personal preferences. Production was limited to 250 instruments in total, but ultimately only 178 six-string models were completed, making this guitar particularly rare.In terms of construction, this model deliberately departs from the traditional D35 specifications. The neck, back and sides are all made from sinker mahogany, selected for its warm, rich tone and distinctive grain. The Adirondack spruce top features Martin’s Vintage Tone System (VTS) treatment, giving the guitar excellent focus and tonal nuance. Details such as the vintage gloss finish and antique white binding lend the instrument a subtly aged appearance that reflects its musical heritage. The origins of this model lie in Gilmour’s original D35 from the early 1970s, a guitar he bought from a street vendor in New York that went on to become his main acoustic workhorse with both Pink Floyd and throughout his solo career. Following the sale of that instrument at auction in 2019, Martin and Westside Distribution collaborated to develop both a new six-string and a 12-string model reflecting Gilmour’s current musical vision. Every guitar in the series features a label signed by Gilmour himself, making this instrument not only musically compelling but also a notable piece for collectors. This Martin D35 shows light play wear on the pickguard, two glossy spots on the back of the body and some sheen on the back of the neck. These signs indicate that the guitar has been played, yet it remains exceptionally clean and is in near mint condition. This guitar has been carefully inspected for condition and playability, then set up to our Gold Standard by a luthier. We make sure it arrives in your hands exactly as it should: sounding its best, playing effortlessly and ready to be enjoyed from the very first note.
