The Florentine Piatta is a characteristic design by Ron Thorn in which classic single-cutaway pickups are combined with his own approach to construction and playability. The model is part of Thorn's Florentine family, where the distinctive Florentine cutaway not only ensures a recognizable look but also improves access to the higher register. Thorn is known for his highly detailed craftsmanship and a combination of traditional guitar building with technically sophisticated constructions.

The Piatta distinguishes itself within the Thorn range through its flat top and relatively direct, traditional solidbody approach. The model is designed around a powerful and versatile pickup configuration, combining humbuckers to offer a wide tonal palette. In doing so, the Piatta aligns with Thorn's philosophy of not simply copying familiar American guitar traditions, but developing them further with unique construction details, high-quality materials, and a strong focus on playability.

Ron Thorn began building guitars at the age of thirteen, drawing on his background in a family of carpenters. In 1993, he founded Thorn Custom Inlay and, together with his father, became the resident inlay specialist at the Fender Custom Shop in the years that followed. Around 2000, he started Thorn Custom Guitars, where he made a name for himself with exceptionally detailed, hand-built Artisan guitars.

In 2018, he stopped his own production to become the first Principal Master Builder at the Fender Custom Shop, where he built special instruments for artists and developed various innovative models, among other things. After five years at Fender, Thorn returned in 2024 with his own brand, once again focused on high-quality, fully hand-built instruments.
