Met de 70's Les Paul Goldtop maakte Gibson een ommekeer in de specificaties van het iconische model. Tot dan toe werd het model uitgerust met P90-elementen, maar door de vraag naar elementen die minder brom veroorzaakten werden deze vervangen door de kleinere versie van de reguliere humbuckers.
