Wat begon als een verkenning van een specifieke klassieke rockklank uit de jaren '60 en '70, evolueerde naar een multidimensionale gain-machine die in staat was tot alles tussen weerbarstige sputterende fuzz en klassieke rock-gong.
Het hart en de ziel van de Dreamcoat is een bijna exacte recreatie van het voorversterkercircuit van het Aiwa TP-1011 reel-to-reel-deck dat te vinden is in klassieke rockopnames uit de jaren 60 en 70. Alle functionaliteit van dat apparaat is aanwezig, van sprankelende cleans tot krachtige crunch en glazige leads, maar de "Sat" -regeling geeft je een extra laag grunt, waardoor de Dreamcoat kan variëren van bijna droge tonale onverschilligheid tot volledige "smelt-amp†Neil Young-achtige tweedgeluiden.
Een bepaald klassiek rockgeluid was echter niet alleen een tape deck. Sommige spelers installeerden een op passieve inductor gebaseerde frequentie "booster" in hun gitaren die beide kanten van het spectrum rond de resonantiefrequentie van hun gitaar afsneed, waardoor de indruk werd gewekt van een frequentieboost. Daartoe heeft Catalinbread een frequentieversterkercircuit toegevoegd dat niets afsnijdt, waardoor je een rijkere toon krijgt met een beetje 'oomph' waar het telt.
Hij draait op 20V, slechts een fractie hoger dan de originele Aiwa, waardoor zijn mogelijkheden worden uitgebreid en tonnen headroom worden geleverd.

The heart and soul of the Dreamcoat is a near-exact recreation of the preamp circuit from the Aiwa TP-1011 reel-to-reel deck that can be found in '60s and '70s classic rock recordings. All of the functionality of that unit is present, from sparkling cleans to powerful crunch and glassy leads, but the “Sat” control gives you an extra layer of grunt, allowing the Dreamcoat to range between near-dry tonal indifference to complete “melting-amp” Neil Young-esque tweed sounds.
A certain classic rock sound wasn’t just a tape deck, though.
