In 1978 werd het meest veelzijdige en invloedrijke distortionpedaal aller tijden uitgevonden in Kalamazoo, MI: de Proco RAT. Scott Burnham en Steve Kiraly kwamen op het idee na het spelen, repareren en aanpassen van alle beschikbare distortion-pedalen op de markt. Ze wilden een pedaal dat van overdrive naar distortion en dan helemaal naar fuzz kon gaan.

Voortbouwend op JHS' Multi-Mode pedaalserie die de Muffuletta en Bonsai omvat, gebruikt de PackRat hetzelfde unieke digitale startbaansysteem om de paden van 261 componenten via 40 individuele schakelaars te leiden. Dit betekent dat wanneer je een van de negen legendarische of zeldzame modi kiest, je volledig analoge circuits speelt die elke modus perfect nabootsen, zelfs tot aan de verouderende componenten (ook bekend als component drift).
