De PRS Private Stock John McLaughlin is een klassiek instrument dat zorgvuldig is gespecificeerd door Paul Reed Smith om John McLaughlin te eren. Alle houtsoorten zijn speciaal door Smith gekozen vanwege hun klank, figuur en gewicht. De specificaties zijn vrij rechttoe rechtaan: een esdoorn bovenblad , mahoniehouten achterkant, hormigo hals (een toonhout dat op marimba's wordt gebruikt) met een African blackwood toets, 22 frets, 25" schaallengte, Pattern hals, PRS's gepatenteerde Gen III tremolo en PRS Phase III stemmechanieken.
Enkele van de meer bijzondere details van dit model zitten in de afwerking, pickups en elektronica. De gitaar is afgewerkt in hoogglans nitro met een onafgewerkte hals met 'clear grain filler' voor een soepel, natuurlijk speelgevoel. De TCI pickups bevatten American Alnico en zijn gekoppeld aan volume- en toonregelaars met een 3-weg toggle pickupschakelaar en twee mini-toggle EQ-schakelaars. De mini-toggles fungeren als afgestemde high-pass filters als ze zijn ingeschakeld (in de bovenste stand), waardoor de lage tonen worden verwijderd en de hoge frequenties worden doorgelaten voor meer helderheid en muzikale hoge tonen.
"John's luthier zijn is een eer waar ik tientallen jaren voor heb gevochten, en om hem nu een signature model te kunnen geven is een speciaal moment voor mij en hopelijk ook voor de industrie," aldus Paul Reed Smith. "Deze gitaren zijn ontworpen om zowel magisch aan te voelen als je ze oppakt, maar ook om bijna te verdwijnen in je handen zodat je je enkel kunt concentreren op het spelen. John kan buitengewoon snel spelen en met dit instrument hoor je elke noot. Het was de sleutel om die balans te vinden als gitaarbouwer en om elk beetje geluid uit de gitaar te krijgen."
Paul Reed Smith en Paul Miles hebben elk Private Stock John McLaughlin model gesigneerd op de achterkant van de gitaarkop. Als extra detail heeft John McLaughlin de achterplaat van elk instrument gesigneerd.
Er worden in 2023 slechts 200 PRS Private Stock John McLaughlin gitaren worden gemaakt, waarvan er slechts een aantal beschikbaar zullen zijn voor de Europese Markt.

The PRS Private Stock John McLaughlin is a classic instrument that has been meticulously spec’d by Paul Reed Smith to honor John McLaughlin. All of the woods were specially chosen by Smith for their tone, figure, and weight. The specs are fairly straightforward: maple top, mahogany back, hormigo neck (a tone wood used on marimbas for sound-producing tines) with an African blackwood fretboard, 22 frets, 25” scale length, Pattern neck, PRS’s patented Gen III tremolo, and PRS Phase III tuners.
Some of the more particular details on this model are in the finish, pickups, and electronics. The guitar is finished in high-gloss nitro with an unfinished neck with clear grain filler for a smooth, natural playing feel. The TCI pickups feature American Alnico and are paired with volume and tone controls with a 3-way toggle pickup switch and two mini-toggle EQ switches. The mini-toggles act as tuned high-pass filters when engaged (in the up position), removing shelved low-end and allowing the high frequencies through for more clarity and musical highs.
“Being John’s guitar maker is an honor I fought decades for, and to now be able to give him a signature model is a special moment for me and hopefully the industry,” said Paul Reed Smith. “These guitars were designed to both feel like magic when you pick them up but also disappear in your hands so you can just focus on playing. John is capable of playing at extraordinary speed and with this instrument, you hear every note. Finding that balance as a guitar maker and coaxing every bit of sound out of the guitar was the key.”
Paul Reed Smith and Paul Miles have signed each Private Stock John McLaughlin model on the back of the headstock. As an added detail, John McLaughlin has autographed the backplate of each instrument. Only 200 PRS Private Stock John McLaughlin guitars will be made in 2023.
