De KM1000 werd eind jaren '70 geïntroduceerd als Kentucky's antwoord op de vraag van spelers en verzamelaars naar een betaalbare mandoline die de kwaliteit en klank van vintage instrumenten uit de vroege twintigste eeuw kon evenaren.
