Paul Duff is een gepassioneerde instrumentbouwer uit Palmyra, Western Australia. Hij ontdekte de mandoline via een toevallige ontmoeting met een bluegrassband in zijn thuisland, een ervaring die zijn leven richting lutherie stuurde. Zijn zoektocht naar een beter instrument dan zijn eerste goedkope mandoline leidde in 1982 tot het bouwen van zijn eigen F5, geïnspireerd op Bill Monroe en de klassieke Gibson-modellen uit de jaren twintig. Hij gebruikt geen CNC-machines, maar behoudt het handwerk in elke fase: van het carven van boven- en achterblad tot het snijden van parelmoer- en abalone inleg en het met de hand aanbrengen van sunbursts en french polish. Zijn dagelijks werk wordt gedreven door een continue ontwikkeling van oog en oor, steeds zoekend naar de ideale balans tussen klank en esthetiek.
Deze Duff H5 Mandola is het 155e instrument van de hand van Paul Duff, en is gebouwd in 2010. De H5 mandola is in feite een grotere versie van een F5 mandoline, en heeft door deze grotere klankkast en langere mensuur een luide en gebalanceerde klank met een snelle respons. Doordat de mandola ook nog eens een kwint lager is gestemd dan een mandoline is het karakter van het instrument volledig anders, en dit breng het beste in de creatieve muzikant naar boven!
De mandola heeft lichte speelsporen op de klankkast en hals die beide van prachtig getekend Sugar esdoorn zijn, en net als het sparren bovenblad van een schitterende French polish sunburst finish zijn voorzien. De klankkast, hals en slagplaat zijn voorzien van een ivoroid binding, en de parelmoer inleg én topkam maken de hals helemaal af. Als kers op de taart heeft de mandola een prachtig James staartstuk met gegraveerd Duff-logo.

Paul Duff is a passionate instrument maker from Palmyra, Western Australia. He discovered the mandolin through a chance encounter with a bluegrass band in his home country, an experience that steered his life toward lutherie. His search for a better instrument than his first inexpensive mandolin led him to build his own F5 in 1982, inspired by Bill Monroe and the classic Gibson models of the 1920s. This fascination with the Loar period blossomed into a career spanning over forty years, during which he dedicated himself to mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, and archtop guitars in the same tradition.
Duff is a true craftsman who masters his craft without modern automation. He doesn't use CNC machines, but preserves the handcrafted quality at every stage: from carving the top and back to cutting mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays and hand-applying sunbursts and French polish. His daily work is driven by a continuous development of his eye and ear, always seeking the ideal balance between sound and aesthetics.
This Duff H5 Mandola is the 155th instrument Paul Duff designed and built in 2010. The H5 mandola is essentially a larger version of an F5 mandolin, and thanks to its larger body and longer scale, it has a loud and balanced tone with a quick response. Because the mandola is also tuned a fifth lower than a mandolin, the instrument's character is completely different, bringing out the best in the creative musician!
The mandola has light playwear on the back and neck, both of which are beautifully figured sugar maple and, like the spruce top, feature a stunning French polish sunburst finish. The back and neck, neck, and pickguard feature ivoroid binding, and the mother-of-pearl inlays and nut complete the neck. As the icing on the cake, the mandola features a beautiful James tailpiece with an engraved Duff logo.

Paul Duff ist ein leidenschaftlicher Instrumentenbauer aus Palmyra, Westaustralien. Durch eine zufällige Begegnung mit einer Bluegrass-Band in seiner Heimat entdeckte er die Mandoline – ein Erlebnis, das ihn zum Instrumentenbau führte. Auf der Suche nach einem besseren Instrument als seiner ersten, preiswerten Mandoline baute er 1982 seine eigene F5, inspiriert von Bill Monroe und den klassischen Gibson-Modellen der 1920er-Jahre. Diese Faszination für die Loar-Ära entwickelte sich zu einer über vierzigjährigen Karriere, in der er sich Mandolinen, Mandolas, Mandocellos und Archtop-Gitarren in derselben Tradition widmete.
Duff ist ein wahrer Handwerker, der sein Handwerk ohne moderne Automatisierung beherrscht. Er verwendet keine CNC-Maschinen, sondern bewahrt die handwerkliche Qualität in jedem Arbeitsschritt: vom Schnitzen der Decke und des Bodens über das Schneiden von Perlmutt- und Abalone-Einlagen bis hin zum Auftragen von Sunburst-Lackierungen und Schellackpolitur. Diese Duff H5 Mandola ist das 155. Instrument, das Paul Duff im Jahr 2010 entworfen und gebaut hat. Die H5 Mandola ist im Wesentlichen eine größere Version der F5 Mandoline und zeichnet sich dank ihres größeren Korpus und der längeren Mensur durch einen lauten und ausgewogenen Ton mit schneller Ansprache aus. Da die Mandola zudem eine Quinte tiefer gestimmt ist als eine Mandoline, besitzt sie einen völlig anderen Charakter und entfaltet so ihr volles kreatives Potenzial!
Die Mandola weist leichte Gebrauchsspuren an Boden und Hals auf. Beide sind aus wunderschön gemasertem Zuckerahorn gefertigt und, wie die Fichtendecke, mit einem atemberaubenden, französisch polierten Sunburst-Finish versehen. Boden, Hals, Hals und Schlagbrett sind mit Ivoroid-Binding versehen, und die Perlmutt-Einlagen und der Sattel vervollständigen den Hals. Als besonderes Highlight verfügt die Mandola über ein wunderschönes James-Saitenhalter mit eingraviertem Duff-Logo.
Diese Duff H5 Mandola wird in einem Koffer von Presto Cases geliefert, der – wie Duff selbst – aus Westaustralien stammt.
