The Martin D28 is one of the most iconic acoustic guitars of all time, and this 1984 D28 was built exactly 50 years after the introduction of the first 14-fret D28. The D28 originally appeared as a 12-fret model, followed in 1934 by the 14-fret version we still know today.

Hoewel het model door de jaren heen vele wijzigingen heeft ondergaan, heeft deze dreadnought nog steeds dat onmiskenbare karakter dat de D28 al decennialang zo geliefd maakt onder gitaristen wereldwijd. De combinatie van een Indisch palissander klankkast met Sitka sparren bovenblad levert die kenmerkende volle, krachtige klank op waar de D28 beroemd om is geworden.
De dreadnought bodyvorm zorgt voor een stevige bas en uitstekende projectie, terwijl het zachte V-profiel van de mahonie hals comfortabel in de hand ligt. Deze D28 is bovendien uitgerust met een LR Baggs Anthem pickup, waardoor versterkt spelen geen enkel probleem is. De gitaar heeft relatief lichte speelsporen gezien zijn leeftijd; op het bovenblad en de klankkast zijn meerdere dings te vinden, en ook op achterop de hals en op de tuners zijn sporen van gebruik te vinden. Verder moet opgemerkt worden dat het brugzadel aan de lage kant begint te raken. De gitaar is momenteel goed bespeelbaar, en is nog niet toe aan een neck reset.
De gitaar wordt geleverd in een koffer waarop een backstage-pas van de Europese Yurp-Tour van James Taylor in 1998 is geplakt. De sticker is van het concert van 8 maart in Frankfurt, en was van een crewlid die diende al promoter. Of de gitaar ook bij de tour aanwezig was of het crewlid zelf later zijn backstage-pas wilde tonen bij zijn eigen optredens weten we niet, dus de waarheid blijft hier helaas in het midden!
Although the model has undergone many changes over the years, this dreadnought still possesses the unmistakable character that has made the D28 so beloved by guitarists worldwide for decades. The combination of Indian rosewood back and sides with a Sitka spruce top produces the characteristic full, powerful tone for which the D28 is famous.
The dreadnought body shape delivers a powerful bass and excellent projection, while the soft V-profile of the mahogany neck fits comfortably in the hand. This D28 is also equipped with an LR Baggs Anthem pickup, making amplified playing a breeze. The guitar has relatively light playwear considering its age; several dings can be found on the top and back of the body, and there are also signs of wear on the back of the neck and the tuners. It should also be noted that the bridge saddle is starting to get a bit low. The guitar currently plays well and is not due for a neck reset.
The guitar comes in a case with a backstage pass from James Taylor's 1998 European Yurp Tour stickered on it. The sticker is from the March 8th concert in Frankfurt, and belonged to a crew promoter. We don't know whether the guitar was also present on the tour or whether the crew member himself wanted to show his backstage pass at his own performances later, so your guess is as good as ours!
Obwohl das Modell im Laufe der Jahre viele Veränderungen erfahren hat, besitzt diese Dreadnought immer noch den unverwechselbaren Charakter, der die D28 seit Jahrzehnten bei Gitarristen weltweit so beliebt macht. Die Kombination aus Boden und Zargen aus indischem Palisander und einer Sitka-Fichtendecke erzeugt den charakteristischen, vollen und kraftvollen Ton, für den die D28 berühmt ist.
Die Dreadnought-Korpusform sorgt für einen kräftigen Bass und eine exzellente Projektion, während das weiche V-Profil des Mahagoni-Halses angenehm in der Hand liegt. Diese D28 ist außerdem mit einem LR Baggs Anthem-Tonabnehmer ausgestattet, was das verstärkte Spielen zum Kinderspiel macht. Die Gitarre weist, ihrem Alter entsprechend, relativ leichte Gebrauchsspuren auf. Auf der Ober- und Unterseite des Korpus befinden sich einige kleine Dellen, und auch am Halsrücken und den Mechaniken sind Gebrauchsspuren zu erkennen. Der Steg ist zudem etwas abgesunken. Die Gitarre lässt sich aktuell gut spielen und benötigt keine Halskorrektur.
Die Gitarre befindet sich in einem Koffer mit einem Aufkleber vom Backstage-Pass der James Taylor Europatournee „Yurp“ von 1998. Der Aufkleber stammt vom Konzert am 8. März in Frankfurt und gehörte einem Crewmitglied, das als Promoter tätig war. Ob die Gitarre tatsächlich auf der Tour dabei war oder ob das Crewmitglied seinen Backstage-Pass später bei eigenen Auftritten vorzeigen wollte, ist nicht bekannt. Die Wahrheit bleibt leider im Dunkeln.
