De McCarty 594 is vernoemd naar Ted McCarty, de voormalige Gibson-president die een belangrijke rol speelde in de ontwikkeling van iconische gitaren zoals de Les Paul en ES-335. Paul Reed Smith ontwierp dit model als eerbetoon aan McCarty's erfenis, waarbij hij de beste eigenschappen van vintage designs combineert met moderne bouwkwaliteit.
