De Gibson Les Paul Standard uit 1978 is een échte Norlin-era Les Paul met karakter. Deze periode, vernoemd naar het toenmalige moederbedrijf van Gibson, staat bekend om bepaalde bouwkeuzes die destijds controversieel waren maar tegenwoordig hun eigen aanhang hebben verworven. De driedelige esdoorn top en hals zijn typisch voor deze tijd, terwijl de body bij dit exemplaar uit één stuk mahonie bestaat. Bij de meeste Les Pauls uit dit tijdperk zien we een mahonie body uit meerdere kleinere delen, het gevolg van de betere beschikbaarheid van dit materiaal.
Deze vintage Les Paul Standard verkeert in zeer goede conditie, is bijzonder resonant en heeft, niet in de laatste plaats dankzij zijn forse gewicht van bijna 5 kilogram, een bijzonder goede sustain. De gitaar vertoont de speelsporen die je mag verwachten bij een instrument dat al bijna een halve eeuw meegaat, en deze Les Paul beschikt ook nog over zijn originele elektronica. De twee Patent No. humbuckers en de CTS-potmeters dateren beide uit 1978 en geven de gitaar zijn authentieke vintage geluid. Deze pickups, vernoemd naar het patentnummer dat op de onderkant staat gestempeld, zijn de directe opvolgers van de legendarische PAF-humbuckers en staan bekend om hun warme, volle toon met net dat beetje extra output.
Achterop de headstock zien we dat de stemmechanieken zijn vervangen, maar de originele exemplaren worden meegeleverd. Verder zijn de frets met putten onder de hoogste drie snaren helaas wat voorbij hun beste tijd, maar de gitaar is nog wel goed bespeelbaar. Voor een Les Paul heeft hij een relatief slanke C-vormige hals, ideaal voor snelle solo's en stevige rockmuziek. The three-piece maple top and neck are typical of this era, while this example's body is made of a single piece of mahogany. Most Les Pauls from this era have a mahogany body constructed from several smaller pieces, a result of the increased availability of this material.
This vintage Les Paul Standard is in excellent condition, is exceptionally resonant, and boasts exceptionally good sustain, thanks in no small part to its hefty weight of almost 5 kilograms. The guitar exhibits the playwear you'd expect from an instrument that has been around for almost half a century, and this Les Paul also still features its original electronics. The two Patent No. 1 humbuckers and the CTS potentiometers both date from 1978 and give the guitar its authentic vintage sound. On the back of the headstock, we see that the tuners have been replaced, but the originals are included. Furthermore, the frets with pits under the top three strings are unfortunately a bit past their prime, but the guitar is still very playable. Für eine Les Paul hat sie einen relativ schlanken C-förmigen Hals, ideal für schnelle Soli und harten Rock.
