Some guitarists want a brand-new guitar, while others prefer an instrument with a story. This Hummingbird falls into both categories, being a player-grade guitar that has undergone some repairs. Nevertheless, the sound is still typically vintage Gibson!
Gibson Hummingbird Cherry Sunburst 1968
De Hummingbird was bij zijn introductie in 1960 de eerste square shoulder dreadnought van Gibson, en na de J200 het een na duurste model uit de catalogus. Na het succes van de slope shoulder modellen wilde Gibson de strijd blijven aangaan met Martin, en koos dus voor een vergelijkbaar model. De Hummingbird staat bekend om zijn evenwichtige maar krachtige toon met een warme en mellow bassen en sprankelende hoge tonen.
We kunnen wel stellen dat deze Hummingbird uit 1968 een roerig bestaan heeft gekend, en de foto's spreken hier voor zich. Het bovenblad van de gitaar heeft meerdere grote cracks, en ook op de zijkant van de klankkast is een grote crack te vinden. De cracks zijn gestabiliseerd met meerdere cleats en voldoende lijm, en aan de binnenzijde van de klankkast is ook te zien dat de braces opnieuw gelijmd zijn. Verder zijn de brug en slagplaat ook opnieuw gelijmd, en is ook de brugplaat gerepareerd.
Ondanks, of juist dankzij, de vele reparaties is de bespeelbaarheid van de gitaar in orde, waardoor deze player grade Hummingbird een goed voorbeeld is van een vintage gitaar met een rijk verleden, klaar voor de toekomst. De gitaar heeft door de uitgevoerde reparaties wel wat bas ingeleverd, maar is desalniettemin een goede studiogitaar met die klassieke droge, maar ook dynamische, Gibson klank.

When it was introduced in 1960, the Hummingbird was Gibson's first square-shoulder dreadnought, and after the J200, the second most expensive model in the catalog. Following the success of the slope-shoulder models, Gibson wanted to continue competing with Martin and therefore opted for a similar model. The Hummingbird is known for its balanced yet powerful tone with warm and mellow bass and sparkling highs.
It's safe to say that this 1968 Hummingbird has had a turbulent life, and the photos speak for themselves. The guitar's top has several large cracks, and a large crack can also be found on the side of the soundboard. The cracks have been stabilized with multiple cleats and ample glue, and on the inside of the soundboard, you can also see that the braces have been reglued. Furthermore, the bridge and pickguard have also been reglued, and the bridgeplate has been repaired.
Despite, or perhaps thanks to, the numerous repairs, the guitar's playability is excellent, making this player-grade Hummingbird a prime example of a vintage guitar with a rich history, ready for the future. While the guitar has lost some bass due to the repairs, it is nonetheless a good studio guitar with that classic, dry yet dynamic Gibson tone.

Als die Hummingbird 1960 auf den Markt kam, war sie Gibsons erste Dreadnought mit eckiger Schulter und nach der J200 das zweitteuerste Modell im Katalog. Nach dem Erfolg der Modelle mit schräger Schulter wollte Gibson weiterhin mit Martin konkurrieren und entschied sich daher für ein ähnliches Modell. Die Hummingbird ist bekannt für ihren ausgewogenen und dennoch kraftvollen Klang mit warmen, weichen Bässen und brillanten Höhen.
Man kann mit Fug und Recht behaupten, dass diese Hummingbird von 1968 einiges mitgemacht hat, und die Fotos sprechen für sich. Die Decke weist mehrere große Risse auf, und auch an der Seite der Decke befindet sich ein großer Riss. Die Risse wurden mit mehreren Leisten und reichlich Leim stabilisiert, und auf der Innenseite der Decke sieht man, dass die Verstrebungen neu verleimt wurden. Außerdem wurden Steg und Schlagbrett neu verleimt und die Stegplatte repariert.
Trotz – oder vielleicht gerade wegen – der zahlreichen Reparaturen ist die Bespielbarkeit der Gitarre hervorragend. Diese Hummingbird in Profiqualität ist ein Paradebeispiel für eine Vintage-Gitarre mit einer reichen Geschichte, die für die Zukunft gerüstet ist. Obwohl die Gitarre durch die Reparaturen etwas an Bass verloren hat, ist sie dennoch eine gute Studiogitarre mit dem klassischen, trockenen und dennoch dynamischen Gibson-Ton.
