A vintage Gibson is a sight to behold in itself, but the 1948 J45, with its weathered appearance, takes things up a notch in terms of mojo. What a cool guitar this is!

Gibson J45 Sunburst 1948

The 1948 J45 marks a pivotal moment in Gibson history. It was the year in which, following the disappearance of the iconic "Only a Gibson is Good Enough" banner in 1946, the beloved script logo also made way for the block logo we still see on Gibsons today. This transitional period, just after World War II, represents a fascinating chapter in the development of what would later become known as "the workhorse" among acoustic guitars.

The guitar produces that unmistakable, dry, and woody tone that only a well-played vintage J45 can deliver. The bass is rich and full yet remains defined, while the highs are clear but never harsh. The scalloped bracing provides wonderful responsiveness, and the guitar reacts instantly to every nuance of your touch. Whether you're playing a heavy bluegrass session or subtle fingerstyle, this J45 truly comes alive, telling its musical story through every note.

To restore the guitar to its optimal condition, we carried out several repairs. For example, the crack behind the bridge on the top was stabilized with cleats on the inside of the sound box. Here, we can also see that one of the top's X-braces has been reglued, as has a brace on the back. The bridge plate has also been repaired with newly inserted maple pieces, which has definitely improved the guitar's resonance!

In terms of playability, a neck reset has optimized the neck angle, and a previously performed refret ensures smooth playability. The tuners and bridge saddle have been replaced, and the nut has been raised. A good polish has finally ensured that the original lacquer shows off its beautiful weather checking with a shine!
