With this Gibson L1 we go back more than a century in time, and it is a fascinating experience to be able to play an instrument of this age!
Gibson L1 Ebony 1921
De Gibson L1 zag in 1902 het levenslicht en werd tot en met 1925 als archtop geproduceerd, om in 1926 terug te keren als flattop. Deze L1 uit 1921 is als onderdeel van de eerste generatie van het model een archtop met rond klankgat. Sinds de introductie kreeg de L1 te maken met enkele gewijzigde specificaties, waarvan de voornaamste in 1908 en 1920 plaatsvonden.
Op dit exemplaar dat gebouwd is in Kalamazoo, Michigan, vinden we de binding rondom het bovenblad, een ebben toets met stipinleg en het schuine 'The Gibson'-logo op de headstock. In 1908 werd de breedte van de klankkast 13.5 inch, werden de snaren met pinnen verankerd in een tortoise plaatje in het trapeze-staartstuk, werd het bovenblad gesierd door een verhoogde tortoise slagplaat en kreeg de hals 13 frets vrij van de body. In 1920 werd de dubbele 'rope'-rozet vervangen door twee vijflaagse ringen.
De gitaar heeft door de jaren heen wat reparaties en ander onderhoud gehad om technisch én visueel in optimale conditie te blijven. Zo zijn er op de hiel en de schouder aan de treblezijde cracks gerepareerd, en hierbij is de hals opnieuw aan de body bevestigd. Ook is er ooit een refret uitgevoerd, en de topkam en stemmechanieken zijn vervangen. Ook hebben de hals en achter- en zijkanten van de body een refinish gehad, maar het bovenblad is ongemoeid gelaten en heeft een Ebony finish die zijn gevorderde leeftijd met trots toont!
Opvallend is dat deze L1 ook een binding aan de achterzijde van de klankkast heeft, maar deze is gezien het bredere en afwijkende materiaal ten opzichte van de ivoroid binding van het bovenblad een later aangebrachte versiering. Ook de binding van de hals wijkt af van het ivoroid, en is dus ook een vervanging. Verder is dit een schitterende vintage gitaar, en het meest fascinerende aan dit prachtige instrument is de mogelijkheid om ruim een eeuw terug in de tijd te gaan en zelf te voelen hoe de instrumenten destijds werden gebouwd!
De gitaar wordt met TFOA paspoort geleverd in een vintage koffer waarvan het handvat is vervangen.
The Gibson L1 was introduced in 1902 and was produced as an archtop until 1925, returning in 1926 as a flattop. This 1921 L1, part of the first generation of the model, is an archtop with a round soundhole. Since its introduction, the L1 has undergone several specification changes, the most significant of which occurred in 1908 and 1920.
This example, built in Kalamazoo, Michigan, features binding around the top, an ebony fingerboard with dot inlays, and the slanted "The Gibson" logo on the headstock. In 1908, the body width increased to 13.5 inches, the strings were pegged to a tortoiseshell plate in the trapeze tailpiece, the top was adorned with a raised tortoiseshell pickguard, and the neck was cleared by 13 frets from the body. In 1920, the double rope rosette was replaced with two five-ply rings.
Over the years, the guitar has undergone some repairs and other maintenance to remain in optimal technical and visual condition. For example, cracks on the heel and shoulder on the treble side were repaired, and the neck was reattached to the body. A refret was also performed at some point, and the nut and tuners were replaced. The neck, back, and sides of the body were also refinished, but the top was left untouched and has an ebony finish that proudly displays its advanced age!
Notably, this L1 also has binding on the back of the body, but given its wider and different material compared to the ivoroid binding on the top, this is a later addition. The neck binding also differs from the ivoroid and is therefore a replacement. Furthermore, this is a beautiful vintage guitar, and the most fascinating thing about this magnificent instrument is the opportunity to step back over a century and experience firsthand how instruments were built back then!
The guitar comes with a TFOA passport in a vintage hardshell case with a replaced handle.
Die Gibson L1 wurde 1902 eingeführt und bis 1925 als Archtop-Gitarre gefertigt, bevor sie 1926 als Flattop zurückkehrte. Diese L1 von 1921, ein Modell der ersten Generation, ist eine Archtop mit rundem Schallloch. Seit ihrer Einführung erfuhr die L1 mehrere Spezifikationsänderungen, die bedeutendsten davon in den Jahren 1908 und 1920.
Dieses in Kalamazoo, Michigan, gebaute Exemplar zeichnet sich durch ein Binding an der Decke, ein Ebenholzgriffbrett mit Punktinlays und das schräge „The Gibson“-Logo auf der Kopfplatte aus. 1908 wurde die Korpusbreite auf 13,5 Zoll vergrößert, die Saiten wurden an einer Schildpattplatte im Trapez-Saitenhalter befestigt, die Decke erhielt ein erhöhtes Schildpatt-Schlagbrett und der Hals wurde um 13 Bünde vom Korpus abgetrennt. 1920 wurde die doppelte Seilrosette durch zwei fünflagige Ringe ersetzt.
Im Laufe der Jahre wurde die Gitarre repariert und gewartet, um ihren optimalen technischen und optischen Zustand zu erhalten. So wurden beispielsweise Risse am Halsfuß und an der Schulter auf der Diskantseite ausgebessert und der Hals wieder am Korpus befestigt. Außerdem wurden die Bünde erneuert und Sattel sowie Mechaniken ausgetauscht. Hals, Boden und Zargen wurden neu lackiert, die Decke blieb jedoch unberührt und präsentiert sich mit einem Ebenholzfinish, das ihr hohes Alter stolz zur Schau stellt.
Bemerkenswert ist, dass diese L1 auch ein Binding am Boden aufweist. Da dieses jedoch breiter ist und sich aus einem anderen Material als das Ivoroid-Binding der Decke zusammensetzt, handelt es sich um eine spätere Ergänzung. Auch das Halsbinding unterscheidet sich vom Ivoroid und ist daher ebenfalls ein Ersatz. Darüber hinaus ist dies eine wunderschöne Vintage-Gitarre, und das Faszinierendste an diesem großartigen Instrument ist die Möglichkeit, über ein Jahrhundert zurückzureisen und hautnah zu erleben, wie Instrumente damals gebaut wurden!
Die Gitarre wird mit einem TFOA-Pass in einem Vintage-Hartschalenkoffer mit ausgetauschtem Griff geliefert.
