The Gretsch 6120 is inextricably linked to Chet Atkins, and this 1966 example represents the second generation of this iconic model. With its thinner Electrotone body and signature painted F-holes, this 6120 is a beautiful example of Gretsch's response to the successful thinline guitars of the time.

In 1962 introduceerde Gretsch een geheel vernieuwde 6120 met double cutaway en een dunnere body van slechts 2 inch. Deze veranderingen kwamen niet uit de lucht vallen; Gibson had groot succes met de ES335 en Chet Atkins zelf gaf aan dat de gesloten Electrotone body beter presteerde op het podium. De open F-holes maakten daarom plaats voor geschilderde exemplaren, een aanbeveling van Chet himself. Het was een tijd waarin gitaarfabrikanten elkaar scherp in de gaten hielden, en Gretsch wilde niet achterblijven in de explosief groeiende gitaarmarkt van de jaren '60.
Deze 6120 werd volgens het serienummer in juli 1966 gebouwd als de 714e gitaar van dat jaar. De gitaar heeft de karakteristieke neo-classic thumbnail inlays op de ebben toets, een esdoorn hals met comfortabel C-profiel en de hoefijzer-versiering op de headstock die typerend is voor deze periode. Het rode viltje rondom de standby-schakelaar verraadt dat we hier met een exemplaar het het eerste deel van 1965 te maken hebben, want later dat jaar veranderde deze naar zwart. De Filter'Tron pickups leveren die typische Gretsch-twang die zo geliefd is bij country- en rockabilly-spelers, maar net zo goed uit de voeten kan in rock en blues. De drie schakelaars bieden samen met de losse volumeregelaars per pickup veel mogelijkheden om je sound te finetunen.
Deze Gretsch is een prachtige vintage gitaar die er ook nog eens bijzonder fraai uitziet! De lak heeft relatief lichte speelsporen gezien de leeftijd van het instrument, maar de volledig originele hardware en pickups tonen hun vintage patina in volle glorie. Ook de binding heeft her en der wat kleine scheurtjes, met name op de hals en bij de halsverbinding. Ook de heelcap heeft betere tijden gezien en is deels vergaan. De gitaar verkeert desalniettemin in excellente staat en wordt geleverd in de originele witte hardshell case met TFOA paspoort.
Consignatie.
In 1962, Gretsch introduced a completely redesigned 6120 with a double cutaway and a thinner body of just 2 inches. These changes weren't unexpected; Gibson had enjoyed great success with the ES335, and Chet Atkins himself noted that the closed Electrotone body performed better on stage. Therefore, the open F-holes were replaced by painted versions, a recommendation from Chet himself. It was a time when guitar manufacturers were closely monitoring each other, and Gretsch didn't want to be left behind in the explosively growing guitar market of the 1960s.
This 6120, according to its serial number, was built in July 1966 as the 714th guitar of that year. It features the characteristic neoclassical thumbnail inlays on the ebony fretboard, a maple neck with a comfortable C-profile, and the horseshoe ornamentation on the headstock typical of this period. The red felt around the standby switch reveals that this is a model from the early part of 1965, as it was changed to black later that year. The Filter'Tron pickups deliver that typical Gretsch twang so beloved by country and rockabilly players, but equally at home in rock and blues. The three switches, along with the separate volume controls for each pickup, offer many options for fine-tuning your sound.
This Gretsch is a beautiful vintage guitar that also looks exceptionally good! The finish has relatively light playwear considering the instrument's age, but the completely original hardware and pickups display their vintage patina in all its glory. The binding also has some small cracks here and there, particularly on the neck and neck joint. The heel cap has also seen better days and is partially worn. Nevertheless, the guitar is in excellent condition and comes in its original white hardshell case with a TFOA passport.
Consignment.
1962 präsentierte Gretsch eine komplett überarbeitete 6120 mit Double-Cutaway und einem nur 5 cm dünner werdenden Korpus. Diese Änderungen kamen nicht unerwartet; Gibson hatte mit der ES-335 große Erfolge gefeiert, und Chet Atkins selbst hatte festgestellt, dass der geschlossene Electrotone-Korpus auf der Bühne besser funktionierte. Daher wurden die offenen F-Löcher durch lackierte ersetzt – eine Empfehlung von Chet Atkins persönlich. Es war eine Zeit, in der sich die Gitarrenhersteller genau beobachteten, und Gretsch wollte im explosionsartig wachsenden Gitarrenmarkt der 1960er-Jahre nicht den Anschluss verlieren.
Diese 6120 wurde laut Seriennummer im Juli 1966 als 714. Gitarre des Jahres gebaut. Sie verfügt über die charakteristischen neoklassischen Thumbnail-Inlays auf dem Ebenholzgriffbrett, einen Ahornhals mit komfortablem C-Profil und die für diese Zeit typische Hufeisenverzierung auf der Kopfplatte. Der rote Filz um den Standby-Schalter verrät, dass es sich um ein Modell aus dem Frühjahr 1965 handelt, da dieser später im selben Jahr durch schwarzen Filz ersetzt wurde. Die Filter'Tron-Pickups liefern den typischen Gretsch-Twang, der bei Country- und Rockabilly-Gitarristen so beliebt ist, aber auch in Rock und Blues gleichermaßen überzeugt. Die drei Schalter und die separaten Lautstärkeregler für jeden Pickup bieten vielfältige Möglichkeiten zur Klangformung.
Diese Gretsch ist eine wunderschöne Vintage-Gitarre, die auch optisch hervorragend ist! Der Lack weist für das Alter des Instruments relativ leichte Gebrauchsspuren auf, während die komplett originale Hardware und die Pickups ihre Vintage-Patina in ihrer ganzen Pracht präsentieren. Das Binding weist hier und da, insbesondere am Hals und am Halsansatz, einige kleine Risse auf. Die Fersenkappe hat schon bessere Zeiten gesehen und ist teilweise abgenutzt. Dennoch ist die Gitarre in exzellentem Zustand und wird im originalen weißen Hartschalenkoffer mit TFOA-Pass geliefert.
