De Gretsch Penguin heeft een bijzondere plek in de gitaargeschiedenis. Het model werd in 1956 geïntroduceerd als het luxe solidbody broertje van de White Falcon, en was destijds het duurste solidbody model in het Gretsch-assortiment. Geschat wordt dat er minder dan vijftig originele single-cut Penguins zijn gebouwd, wat het model tot een van de zeldzaamste Gretsch-gitaren ooit maakt.
