Stefan Sobell has been building archtop guitars from his workshop in the north of England since the early 1980s, and his instruments enjoy an excellent reputation among connoisseurs. This is one of the very first, built in 1983, just two years after Sobell completed his first archtop.

Een Sobell archtop uit 1983 is bepaald geen alledaagse verschijning, en deze gitaar verdient dan ook de aandacht van elke serieuze liefhebber van handgebouwde instrumenten.
Stefan Sobell bouwt gitaren vanuit zijn werkplaats in het noorden van Engeland, en zijn archtops genieten onder kenners een uitstekende reputatie. Sobell voltooide zijn eerste archtop in 1981 geïnspireerd door zijn geliefde Martin C1 uit 1931. Dit exemplaar dateert uit 1983 en behoort daarmee tot de vroegste archtops die het atelier verlieten. Het basisontwerp van zijn archtops is door de jaren heen niet wezenlijk veranderd wat meteen iets zegt over hoe doordacht het van het begin af aan was.
Het gesneden Duitse sparren bovenblad in combinatie met de massief mahonie klankkast geeft deze gitaar een eigen klankkarakter. Sobells archtops klinken niet zoals een typische archtop: ze hebben de verwachte aanslag, maar zijn ook helder en vol met een goede sustain, geschikt voor zowel fingerstyle als plectrum spelen. De ebben toets met compound radius zorgt voor een prettige bespeelbaarheid over de hele hals, en de refret die de gitaar heeft ondergaan maakt dat hij nu weer als nieuw speelt.
De gitaar verkeert in zeer nette staat. Op de achterzijde van de klankkast zijn twee professioneel gerepareerde cracks aanwezig die nadien zijn overgelakt en op het eerste gezicht nauwelijks opvallen. Verder zijn er geen noemenswaardige gebruikssporen te vinden, en ziet de gitaar er voor zijn leeftijd opmerkelijk schoon uit. De gitaar wordt met TFOA paspoort geleverd in een koffer.

Sobell completed his first archtop in 1981, inspired by his beloved 1931 Martin C1. This example dates from 1983, making it one of the earliest archtops to leave the workshop. The basic design of his archtops hasn't changed significantly over the years, which speaks volumes about how well-thought-out it was from the start.
The carved German spruce top combined with the solid mahogany back and sides gives this guitar its own distinctive tonal character. Sobell's archtops don't sound like a typical archtop: they have the expected attack, but are also clear and full with good sustain, suitable for both fingerstyle and pick playing. The compound-radius ebony fingerboard provides comfortable playability across the entire neck, and the refretted finish makes it play like new again.
The guitar is in very good condition. There are two professionally repaired cracks on the back of the body that have since been refinished and are barely noticeable at first glance. Otherwise, there are no significant signs of wear, and the guitar looks remarkably clean for its age. The guitar comes with a TFOA passport and comes in a hardshell case.

Eine Sobell Archtop aus dem Jahr 1983 ist wahrlich keine alltägliche Erscheinung, und diese Gitarre verdient die Aufmerksamkeit jedes ernsthaften Liebhabers handgefertigter Instrumente.
Stefan Sobell baut Gitarren in seiner Werkstatt in Nordengland, und seine Archtops genießen unter Kennern einen exzellenten Ruf. Inspiriert von seiner geliebten Martin C1 von 1931, vollendete Sobell seine erste Archtop im Jahr 1981. Dieses Exemplar stammt aus dem Jahr 1983 und ist damit eine der ersten Archtops, die die Werkstatt verließen. Das Grunddesign seiner Archtops hat sich über die Jahre kaum verändert, was Bände über die durchdachte Konstruktion von Anfang an spricht.
Die geschnitzte deutsche Fichtendecke in Kombination mit dem massiven Mahagoni-Boden und -Zargen verleiht dieser Gitarre ihren unverwechselbaren Klangcharakter. Sobells Archtops klingen nicht wie typische Archtops: Sie haben den erwarteten Attack, sind aber gleichzeitig klar und voll mit gutem Sustain und eignen sich sowohl für Fingerstyle als auch für Plektrumspiel. Das Ebenholzgriffbrett mit Compound-Radius bietet über den gesamten Hals ein komfortables Spielgefühl, und die neu bundierte Oberfläche lässt die Gitarre wie neu klingen.
Die Gitarre ist in sehr gutem Zustand. Zwei professionell reparierte Risse auf der Rückseite des Korpus wurden ausgebessert und sind kaum sichtbar. Ansonsten weist sie keine nennenswerten Gebrauchsspuren auf und sieht für ihr Alter bemerkenswert sauber aus. Die Gitarre wird mit einem TFOA-Pass und einem Hartschalenkoffer geliefert.
