Around the time Norlin sold Gibson in 1987, the company introduced the Nouveau line—a short-lived series of guitars aimed at offering a more affordable alternative by blending Japanese craftsmanship with American assembly. Though initially introduced under the Gibson name, the Nouveau line was soon shifted to Epiphone. Despite their quality and unique role in Gibson’s story, these guitars were discontinued just two years later—reportedly due to a copyright dispute with PRS, whose design influence is unmistakable.

De body's en halzen van deze gitaren werden gebouwd in Japan en vervolgens naar de Gibson-fabriek in Nashville verscheept voor de eindassemblage en afwerking. Aanvankelijk werden ze verkocht onder de naam “Nouveau by Gibson” en gepresenteerd als in Amerika gemaakte gitaren, bedoeld als betaalbaarder alternatief voor de standaard Gibson-modellen.
Tijdens de productie werd het merk echter herzien. In eerste instantie werden ze als echte Gibsons gepromoot, maar al snel werd de lijn ondergebracht bij Epiphone. De eerste modellen—semi-hollow akoestische gitaren—verschenen in 1986, gevolgd door solid-body elektrische gitaren in 1987. Eind 1987 kregen de akoestische modellen het label “Nouveau by Epiphone” en begin 1988 volgden ook de elektrische modellen. In 1989 werd de hele lijn stopgezet, waarmee deze gitaren een kort maar boeiend hoofdstuk vormen in de gedeelde geschiedenis van Gibson en Epiphone.
Dit specifieke model heeft een body van driedelig mahoniehout met een hals die uit één stuk mahoniehout bestaat en doorloopt door de body, wat zorgt voor extra sustain en stabiliteit. De Ebanol toets is voorzien van Chevron inlays en geeft de gitaar een unieke uitstraling. De splittable EMG Select humbuckers bieden een breed scala aan klanken—van heldere cleans tot stevige lead sounds—waardoor de gitaar in veel genres inzetbaar is. Gecombineerd met een Steinberger floating tremolo en locking nut is deze gitaar helemaal klaar voor het zwaardere werk.
De gitaar dateert uit 1988 en verkeert in uitstekende staat, met slechts wat kleine gebruikssporen en krasjes op de top en achterkant. De gitaar is volledig functioneel en wordt geleverd in een gigbag met TFOA paspoort.

However, partway through production, the branding shifted. While early promotional materials presented them as full-fledged Gibsons, the line was soon absorbed into the Epiphone family. The first models—semi-hollow flat tops—launched in 1986, with solid-body electrics following in 1987. By the end of that year, acoustics were rebranded as “Nouveau by Epiphone,” and electrics followed suit in early 1988. The entire line was discontinued by early 1989, making these guitars a short-lived yet fascinating chapter in Gibson and Epiphone history.
This particular model features a 3-piece mahogany body with a one-piece neck-through design for added sustain and stability. The Ebanol fretboard is adorned with Chevron inlays, giving it a distinct look. A pair of splittable EMG Select humbuckers provide a wide tonal range, from sparkling cleans to aggressive leads, making it a versatile choice for many genres. Dating back to 1988, this guitar remains in excellent condition with only minor dings and scratches on the top and back. Fully functional and full of character, it comes in a gig bag with TFOA passport.
