This Gibson L3 takes us back more than a century, and it is a fascinating experience to be able to play an instrument of this age!
Gibson L3 1921
De Gibson L3 zag in 1902 het levenslicht, en werd tot en met 1933 geproduceerd. De L3 was Gibson's meest chique gitaar met kleine body op het moment dat dit instrument werd gebouwd, en had een prachtige handgewreven sunburst finish, herringbone en ivoroid rozet, floral headstock inleg en schuingedrukt 'The Gibson' logo. Opmerkelijk is ook de 13 fret halsverbinding.
Met een bodybreedte van 13.7 inch is deze L3 beduidend kleiner dan Gibson's 16 inch L4 en L5 modellen, en heeft een snarenbalans die de voorkeur geeft aan de midden- en hoge tonen boven de lagere frequenties die de grotere gitaren produceren. Dit betekent dat hij op zijn best klinkt met fingerstyle technieken, mede door de brede topkam en zeer stevige V-vormige hals.
Gezien het feit dat deze gitaar meer dan een eeuw oud is, kunnen we niet anders concluderen dat het instrument nog in excellente conditie verkeert. De gitaar heeft uiteraard speelsporen opgelopen door de jaren heen, maar deze geven deze Gibson zijn onvervalste charme. Het staartstuk en de stemmechanieken zijn niet origineel, en tevens is er een refret uitgevoerd waarbij ook een compound radius van 7.25" naar 16" is aangebracht, gemeten van de topkam naar het einde van de toets. Ook gaat de gitaar tegenwoordig zonder slagplaat door het leven.
Het meest fascinerende aan dit prachtige instrument is de mogelijkheid om meer dan een eeuw terug in de tijd te gaan en zelf te voelen hoe de instrumenten destijds werden gebouwd!
Consignatie.
The Gibson L3 saw the light of day in 1902, and was produced through 1933. The L3 was Gibson's fanciest small-body guitar at the time this instrument was built, and had a beautiful hand-rubbed sunburst finish, herringbone and ivoroid rosette, floral headstock inlay and italicised 'The Gibson' logo. Also noteworthy is the 13 fret neck joint.
With a body width of 13.7 inches, this L3 is significantly smaller than Gibson's 16-inch L4 and L5 models, and has a string balance that favours the mids and highs over the lower frequencies produced by the larger guitars. This means it sounds at its best with fingerstyle techniques, partly due to the wide nut and very solid V-shaped neck.
Considering that this guitar is over a century old, we cannot help but conclude that the instrument is still in excellent condition. The guitar has obviously suffered playing marks over the years, but these give this Gibson its unadulterated charm. The tailpiece and tuning machines are not original, and also a refret has been carried out which also included a compound radius from 7.25" to 16", measured from the nut to the end of the fretboard. Also, the guitar today goes through life without a pickguard.
The most fascinating thing about this wonderful instrument is the opportunity to go back in time more than a century and feel for yourself how instruments were made back then!

Die Gibson L3 erblickte im Jahr 1902 das Licht der Welt und wurde bis 1933 produziert. Die L3 war Gibsons ausgefallenste Gitarre mit kleinem Korpus zu der Zeit, als dieses Instrument gebaut wurde, und hatte eine schöne handgeriebene Sunburst-Lackierung, Fischgräten- und Elfenbeinrosette, florale Kopfplatteneinlage und kursives "The Gibson"-Logo. Bemerkenswert ist auch die 13-Bund-Halsverbindung.
Mit einer Korpusbreite von 13,7 Zoll ist diese L3 deutlich kleiner als die 16-Zoll-Modelle L4 und L5 von Gibson und hat eine Saitenbalance, die die Mitten und Höhen gegenüber den tieferen Frequenzen der größeren Gitarren bevorzugt. Das bedeutet, dass sie bei Fingerstyle-Techniken am besten klingt, was teilweise auf den breiten Sattel und den sehr soliden V-förmigen Hals zurückzuführen ist.
Wenn man bedenkt, dass diese Gitarre über ein Jahrhundert alt ist, kann man nur zu dem Schluss kommen, dass das Instrument immer noch in einem hervorragenden Zustand ist. Die Gitarre hat offensichtlich im Laufe der Jahre Spielspuren erlitten, aber diese verleihen dieser Gibson ihren unverfälschten Charme. Der Saitenhalter und die Mechaniken sind nicht original, und außerdem wurde ein Refret durchgeführt, bei dem auch der Radius vom Sattel bis zum Ende des Griffbretts von 7,25" auf 16" erweitert wurde. Auch geht die Gitarre heute ohne Schlagbrett durchs Leben.
Das Faszinierendste an diesem wunderbaren Instrument ist die Möglichkeit, mehr als ein Jahrhundert in der Zeit zurückzureisen und selbst zu spüren, wie Instrumente damals gebaut wurden!
