Gazing upon the famous Style “O,” one can almost hear the sweet song of the Hawaiian breeze through the swaying palm trees, syncopated to the soft roll of the waves upon the sandy shore as the sun sets in the distance. Thanks to both its look and sound, the Style “O” remains a timeless classic.

Toen National de Style "O" voor het eerst introduceerde in 1930, beloofde de catalogus dat het "zeker de bewondering van iedereen zou winnen vanwege zijn mooie ontwerp en prachtige klankkwaliteit". En advertenties riepen al snel National's "bestseller ooit!" uit. Nu, meer dan 80 jaar later, is dat nog steeds zo. De Style "O" blijft het vlaggenschip van National - en door de decennia heen is het een van de meest iconische, meest erkende gitaren aller tijden geworden.
Net als het origineel heeft deze 1997 Style "O" een messing body die tot een spiegelglans is gepolijst, vernikkeld en uiteindelijk geëtst met die beroemde 'Lily of the Valley' scène. De maple hals is afgewerkt in een traditionele (soft!) sunburst en wordt afgetopt door een ivoroid-gebonden ebbenhouten toets met daarop vintage-style gegraveerde stemknoppen.
Dit model wordt geleverd met het originele boekje en de catalogus uit '95-'96, die beide de Style "O" Lily of the Valley bevatten. De bijgevoegde prijslijst laat zien dat de Style "3" Single Resonator (wat dit is!) genoteerd stond voor maar liefst $5.100,- dollar, wat volgens de huidige maatstaven zou neerkomen op zo'n €9.800,- euro.
De Lily of the Valley is meestal alleen te vinden op tricones, dus het is ongelooflijk uniek om er een te zien op de klassieke "O" Single Resonator vorm. Waarschijnlijk vanwege de geringe vraag was dit destijds een speciale bestelling van National. Er is de afgelopen 26 jaar goed voor gezorgd, wat betekent dat hij nog steeds in fantastische, om eerlijk te zijn 'Near Mint', staat verkeert.
De vorige eigenaar, niemand minder dan onze eigen Tom Punt, liet een K&K Pure Resonator BB (Biscuit Bridge) installeren zodat hij hem op het podium kon gebruiken. Deze pickup werkt perfect en laat echt het ware geluid van de National horen. Akoestisch is hij luid, direct, scherp, maar hij heeft een prachtige stem in de hogere registers, vooral als je ook een slide gebruikt! Een geweldig klinkende resonator met een ongelooflijk unieke look die je niet meer zult kunnen krijgen.
When National first introduced the Style “O” in 1930, the catalog promised it was “sure to win the admiration of everyone because of its beauty of design and marvelous tone quality.” And advertisements soon proclaimed it National’s “best seller ever!” Now, more than 80 years later, that’s as true as ever. The Style “O” remains National’s flagship — and through the decades, it has become of the most iconic, most recognized guitars of all time.
Just like the original, this 1997 Style “O” features a brass body polished to a mirror-like shine, plated in nickel, and finally etched with that famous 'Lily of the Valley' scene. The maple neck is finished in a traditional (soft!) sunburst and capped by an ivoroid-bound ebony fretboard topped by vintage-style engraved tuners.
This model comes with the original booklet and '95 - '96 catalog, which both feature the Style "O" Lily of the Valley. The price-list included shows us the Style "3" Single Resonator (which this is!) was listed for a whopping $5.100,- dollars, which would add up to around €9.800,- euro's by today's standard.
The Lily of the Valley can usually be found on tricones alone, so it's incredibly unique to see one on the classic "O" Single Resonator shape. Probably due to low demand, this would've been a custom order from National at the time. It's been taken care of over the past 26 years meaning it's still in fantastic, to be honest 'Near Mint', condition.
Its previous owner, none other than our own Tom Punt, had a K&K Pure Resonator BB (Biscuit Bridge) installed so he could use it on stage. This pickup works perfectly and really showcases the National's true sound. Acoustically, it's loud, direct, sharp, but has a beautiful voice in the upper registers, especially using a slide as well! A great sounding resonator with an incredibly unique look that you won't be able to get anymore.
Als National die Style "O" 1930 zum ersten Mal vorstellte, versprach der Katalog, dass sie "wegen ihres schönen Designs und ihrer wunderbaren Klangqualität die Bewunderung aller auf sich ziehen würde". Und in der Werbung wurde sie schon bald als Nationals "Verkaufsschlager aller Zeiten" bezeichnet. Heute, mehr als 80 Jahre später, ist das so wahr wie eh und je. Die Style "O" ist nach wie vor das Flaggschiff von National - und im Laufe der Jahrzehnte wurde sie zu einer der kultigsten und bekanntesten Gitarren aller Zeiten.
Genau wie das Original verfügt diese Style "O" von 1997 über einen Messingkorpus, der auf Hochglanz poliert, vernickelt und schließlich mit dem berühmten Maiglöckchenmotiv versehen wurde. Der Ahornhals ist in traditionellem (weichem!) Sunburst lackiert und wird von einem Griffbrett aus Ebenholz mit Efeubindung und gravierten Mechaniken im Vintage-Stil gekrönt.
Dieses Modell wird mit dem Original-Booklet und dem Katalog '95 - '96 geliefert, die beide den Style "O" Lily of the Valley zeigen. Die beiliegende Preisliste zeigt uns, dass der Style "3" Single Resonator (um den es sich hier handelt!) für satte $5.100,- Dollar angeboten wurde, was nach heutigen Maßstäben etwa €9.800,- Euro entsprechen würde.
Das Maiglöckchen ist normalerweise nur auf Trikonen zu finden, daher ist es unglaublich einzigartig, es auf der klassischen "O"-Single-Resonator-Form zu sehen. Wahrscheinlich aufgrund der geringen Nachfrage, würde dies eine kundenspezifische Bestellung von National zu der Zeit gewesen. Sie wurde in den letzten 26 Jahren gut gepflegt, was bedeutet, dass sie sich immer noch in einem fantastischen, um ehrlich zu sein "fast neuwertigen" Zustand befindet.
Ihr Vorbesitzer, kein Geringerer als unser Tom Punt, ließ einen K&K Pure Resonator BB (Biscuit Bridge) einbauen, damit er sie auf der Bühne verwenden konnte. Dieser Tonabnehmer funktioniert perfekt und bringt den wahren Klang der National erst richtig zur Geltung. Akustisch ist er laut, direkt und scharf, hat aber eine schöne Stimme in den oberen Lagen, besonders wenn man auch ein Slide benutzt! Ein großartig klingender Resonator mit einem unglaublich einzigartigen Look, den Sie nicht mehr bekommen werden.
